The Damned
The Black Album
This is where The Damned proved themselves to be worthy somgwriters as opposed to ‘just another punk band tag’ with this their mighty fourth album originally realesed as a double vinyl set in 1980.Sides one and two are where captain sensible(criminally underated guitarist) finds himself as a major songwriter and guitarist been let loose with all his psychadelic influences in one massive bong hit. This was the damned coming down from speed and astral projecting to another dimension, listen to tracks such as ‘the history of the world’ and ‘wait for the blackout’ with Rat Scabies solid backbeat letting the captain do his magic on the fretboard along with Paul Grays fluid bass runs and Dave Vanians haunting voice to complete the picture.Sides three and four are a live set performed infront of a an invited fan club audience and the massive sprawling side long piece entitled ‘curtain call’ will leave the listener gasping for more, an eighteen minute soundtrack to an imaginary film set in Dave Vanians head which twists and turns giving the listener no indication of whats coming next, you really should go out and buy it.
