Status Quo

Piledriver

Released 1972 on Vertigo

Forget all the negative crap about Quo now. When they released this shit-kickin’ piece of vinyl they were awesome. Rougher round the edges than a yukon bear trappers y‑fronts, meatier than an abbatoir and as subtle as a rubber cosh. “Don’t Waste My Time”, “Big Fat Mama” “Paper Plane”. Forget bloody Margareta Time and In the Army now. They were, at their peak, the greatest rock ’n’ roll band in the world and no mistake.
From the hair, jeans and guitar necks picture on the album’s cover to the gorilla holding a giant banana-shaped bomb, they were the antidote to the plodding, overblown progresive dirges stifling the music scene. Relentless 12 bar riffing that caused more heads to fall off than the French Revolution. No dope smoking armchair spacemen here folks — so greasy, you needed special government issue rubber gloves to carry the damn thing around!
