Cassetteboy
The Parker Tapes
I’ll steer clear of claiming that this LP is one of the best of the 2000’s, however it undoubtedley contains more hilarity, copyright infringement & possibly sheer offensiveness than I’ve ever heard!
The mysterious Cassetteboy (it’s actually 2 guys, but hey who cares) follows the example set by Chris Morris in his Day Today/Brass Eye/Blue Jam projects, but takes it to the Nth degree. It’s quite simply the sound of the radio & TV being turned inside out. For a laugh.
To put it another way, over the course of 98 tracks, and including appearances from Fred Dibnah, Jamie Oliver, Bill Gates, Jimmy Saville and our very own Tony Blair, it manages to twist the endless output of the media into a kind of Noam Chomsky meets Viz alternate reality. The amount of time & effort put into creating this disorienting mix of cut & pasted music and soundbytes must have been incredible, but the sheer power of its satire make it well worth while. This is an absolute must-hear LP, a true classic.
Is this what Jello Biafra meant when he urged us to “…become the media”? I don’t know I was too busy laughing…
