The combination of the abovementioned musicians, along with the western classical music, is so perfect for the atmosphere of the film.


I compiled my own soundtrack album as it doesn't seem like an official one will ever be released. Took quite a bit of searching to find pristine stereo versions of the Zamfir pieces, but the most elusive element is Bruce Smeaton's original score. Luckily I found this perfect recreation of the 'Ascent Theme' on Spotify, performed by the appropriately named David Appleyard:

Beethoven's 5th Piano Concerto fits so perfectly with the mood of this film that its effectiveness has been in no way lessened by the overuse of the piece on movie soundtracks in the intervening years.
