The Brian Jonestown Massacre
Give It Back
This is a true work of genius.Forget the strokes, jet, the thrills and
all the other “retro” fuckwits who crawl out of the woodwork.
Anton Newcombe has to be the greatest songwriter of the modern age,the songs on this record are just too good it makes me sick.
The bands influences are many but the main source of their muse is the 1960’s.They fuse indian music with psychedelia, pop with folk and rock. The last track “Their satanic majesties 2nd request” is an avant garde sound collage with samples of (i think) the mass suicide rally of the jim jones cult, which is fucking trippy.
There an incredible range on this record, every track has it’s own little wonder.Whether it’s drone psychedelia;“Super-sonic”,the pop piss take of the Dandy warhols “Not even if you were the last dandy on earth”. Stoner folk “#1 hit jam”,Songs about junkie hookers “Sue”.
Donovanesque pop “Servo”.
Even the most conventional pop songs like “This is why you love me” work beacause of the quality and vision of the songwriting.
I should have checked out this band years ago,i watched the movie” Dig” and i was hooked on their music.
Do yourself a favour and check out this lp or the bands many other records cos they’re all fucking class.
