DJ Shadow

Endtroducing

Released 1997 on Mo Wax

This is quite an old one now, but Josh Davis (DJ Shadow — geddit?) has just released a second not as good album, so I have been revisiting his first just to remind myself that (1) hip hop does not necessarily involve shouting (2) some DJ’s actually listen to music and (3) who said pop music couldn’t be post-modern?

This album is put together with precision and humour and gets better and better the more you listen — sampling everything from Tangerine Dream to toothpaste adverts (both to fantastic effect), Davis exhibits a humour sadly lacking from many of his peers. His vision is cinematic, not musical, which is why the sounds combine so effectively. This is a virtual soundtrack to a real time film projected in the head of the listener.
