Talk Talk
I Believe In You/John Cope
Released 1988
on Parlophone
This single was lifted from Talk Talk’s faultless 1988 album “The Spirit Of Eden.” The top side “I Believe In You” is a moving anti-heroin song with a soulful lead vocal from Mark Hollis. Musically the song starts as a funeral dirge, then does a slow burn highlighted by Hollis’ broken glass guitar patterns. I believe the version on this 45 is slightly shorter than the album version.
The flipside “John Cope” is also spectacular. It opens with an eerie spoken word thing in the background and guitar chords reminiscent of Neil Young’s “Heart Of Gold”, then the thing shifts into Augustus Pablo territory. This is a classic 2 sided 45 that can still be found for next to nothing.
